Hunter Warbirds Museum & Scone Memorial Airport

Commercial Government

Kingston was excited to be awarded the contract for the design and construct of the Hunter Warbirds Museum & Scone Memorial Airport for Upper Hunter Shire Council.

The project involved undertaking a concept design and developing that design, in collaboration with UHSC, to create a 3200m2 hangar to display fighter planes from WW1 through to current day and an adjoining 2 storey terminal building which includes a function centre, commercial kitchen and gift shop. The terminal building has been future proofed to allow potential expansion of the capabilities of the airport to accept commercial flights which service Scone & the Upper Hunter areas.

The themed hangar houses one of the best aeronautical displays in Australia, including Warbird planes dating back to WW1 as well as aviation memorabilia such as displays of pilots’ uniforms as well as video presentations on the aircraft and the history of aviation.

Importantly, the facility and exhibition will inject significant tourist activity into the local economy. The opening airshow, which included aerial displays by Spitfires, Kittyhawks and British Bristol planes, drew crowds of around 10,000 people and generated approximately $2m for the local economy over a single weekend. The entire facility brings significant local and national exposure to the region and enables local Councils to deliver more creative developments to further drive tourism in the area.

Hunter Warbirds is a marvellous attraction that is set to put the Upper Hunter Shire on the map. The engineering and craftsmanship of the facility is second to none and we thank everyone who worked on the construction of this amazing facility.
