The project involved the refurbishment of the interior spaces on the ground floor main library and mezzanine floor to the City Library and the replacement of asbestos contaminated windows within the entire building and the renovation of the associated rooms.

Works, which were completed in 2016, were undertaken in a fully operational environment with works being coordinated around the existing staff and public.

The refurbishment incorporated a complete demolition and rebuild of the existing library including the creation of quiet rooms, architecturally acoustically designed children’s spaces, research areas, work stations, staff breakout rooms and a kitchen. All existing timber windows within the building had asbestos contaminated seals which required the entire window suites to be replaced. This included within operational offices and work spaces with this being achieved as a result of high levels of communication and coordination with the client.

A rigid communication protocol was established and weekly coordination meetings between the client and the site team were held to ensure all parties had an understanding of the project requirements and also so the Kingston were aware of the clients operational requirements on a daily basis.

The project was extremely successful with works being undertaken with minimal impacts on the operating staff. The project was nominated for a MBA Award in the Fit Out Category as a result of the collaborative approach undertaken during the project and the outstanding quality achieved from the job.
