Education Government School

The project comprised originally of renovations and refurbishments to 15 State Government primary and secondary schools over a 24 week period during the Christmas Holiday period. The schools were located at Copacabana, Avoca, Woy Woy, Umina, Niagara Park, Ettalong, Brisbane Waters, Gosford, Lisarow, Wyoming, Chittaway Bay, Tuggerawong, Ourimbah, The Entrance and Blue Haven with Maitland Public School added as a variation taking the total to 16 schools.

The Project involved negotiations with each of the individual schools,  with a strong emphasis being made on student safety and security with all stakeholders including Department of Education Asset Management, the School Principals, Business Managers and Grounds Assistants. Works commenced to the majority of schools in late December, with them being completed over the school Christmas vacation period in order to minimise safety issues for students as a result of the work. This had the additional benefit of ensuring students did not lose classrooms impacted by the works and hence were able to continue their education without impact.

The scope of work included replacing ageing tiled roofs with colorbond steel, scaffolding, mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, demolition of internal load bearing walls, structural steel, masonry, flooring, external and internal paint finishes. A number of the schools were extremely hard to provide access and required thorough and detailed methodologies to allow the work to be undertaken both safely and on program.

The vast geographical locations of the schools as well as the tight time restraints associated with the works led to this being an extremely challenging project. Overcoming these issues and completing the works within the contract time and with zero safety incidents meant this was an outstanding success for both Kingston and the Department of Education. All stakeholders and parties were extremely happy with the quality of work and thrilled with the outcome achieved by Kingston, acknowledged by a Department of Education Contractor Performance Report achieving a score of 99%.
